We were heading north up the Queensland coast in our Mighty van, and met some backpackers in Rockhampton, who suggested we visit a farmstay – they had just been and were raving about it. We thought, why not, it sounded like great fun.
Next day we drove to Kroombit Park, a large cattle station near Biloela. The owner, Alan, met us as we arrived and showed us around the property. We could camp in our van (which was cheaper) or stay in their guest accommodation; we decided to stay in our van.
That night they put on a real farm meal, with billy tea and damper for desert. After that the fun really started – a mechanical bucking bull! My boyfriend was hopeless at it, but we all got a good laugh. Next it was my turn, and I was even worse – so we decided to stay by the bar instead.
At night in our van we could see the stars in the sky through the windows, and hear all the amazing bush sounds – I have no idea what some of the noises were!
In the morning we went for a horse ride through the bush, and then had a go at clay trap shooting – I was really good at it, even better than some of the boys. The quad bikes were fun too. They had lots of animals on the property, so we could feed chickens, and pat the goats. We also learnt how to crack a whip, and a few new Aussie slang words we didn’t know.
It’s a huge property, and the sunsets were out of this world – so different to our life back in Germany. We were really glad we came and we promised the owners we’ll tell everyone how great it was. Staying at Kroombit showed us what living in Australia was really like, and the staff were all so friendly and happy.
We said goodbye and headed further north in our van, we were told the Whitsundays were the next best place to stop for backpackers. Hope it’s as much fun as Kroombit was!
